Penola, the oldest town in the Limestone Coast region, was founded in 1850 by Scottish born Alexander Cameron. It can boast associations with famous poets Will Ogilvie, Adam Lindsay Gordon and John Shaw Neilson. It also has great religious significance as the place where Mary MacKillop co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with Father Julian Tenison Woods, a priest and scientist. Petticoat Lane, the oldest residential part of the town is a State Heritage Area. Here you can stroll through historic stone and timber cottages.

Mary MacKillop Penola Centre

The Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre and the Woods MacKillop Schoolhouse commemorate the lives of Blessed Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods with displays, photographs, artefacts and history.

Penola Conservation Park

The Park protects a small number of River Red Gum lined swamps that were once widespread in the southeast of S.A.
It is located 10 kilometres west of Penola and contains a variety of plants and birds. Please note that Pets are not permitted.

The John Riddoch Centre

The Penola/Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre is housed within the John Riddoch Centre. It has all the normal Information centre maps, brochures, Internet access and souvenirs, but it also contains a local history room with displays of local art, information on Penola and districts and its people.
Penola is also a short drive from the Coonawarra Wine district. Many Wineries can be found along the The John Riddoch Highway between Penola and Coonawarra.

Penola Golf Course

This 18 hole golf course is flat with plenty of trees and well watered greens and fairways. It is a par 72 with a total length of 5,884 meters
